Today, as in the past, the name Andalusia gains increasing attention throughout the Muslim world. However, this interest is emotion-based rather than knowledge-based. In any Muslim country, including Turkey, you will see an emotional reaction mixed with sadness and admiration in the faces of whomever you meet when they hear the name Andalusia. While the culture and civilization that Andalusians achieved in the past in the stir admiration in Muslim consciousness, the loss of Andalusia, the cradle of such a culture and civilization, after being an abode for Muslims for eight centuries, has been commemorated with great sadness.

Since 1492, Andalusia has been a “lost paradise” for Muslims. Regarding any Muslim homeland that comes under foreign occupation, believers feel the fear it to be turned into Andalusia. Therefore, there is not emotional indifference towards Andalusia. However, it is hard to say that enough effort has been made to research, analyze and understand the history of Andalusia. In other words, although “tears” have been shed as an expression of feelings for Andalusia, not enough “effort” has been shown for it yet.

It will be possible for the Muslim world to make a permanent and impressive new move in the race of civilizations only if it establishes a healthy connection with its past. This modest book has been written to help open a path for such an effort in research the history of Andalusia.
