Indonesia which locates in Southeast Asia, is the most populated Muslim country of the World. Nearly 88% of its 250 million population is Muslim. The country which stayed long years under the colonial rule of the Netherlands, represents the easternmost culture and civilization of the İslamic World.

The book based on the author’s PhD dissertation presented in England. A large part of the book inspects the policy of the colonial administration on Islam, muslim leaders, and Islamic movements during the Indonesian’s fight for independence (1945-1949). Moreover, parts about the politic and religious environment during the colonial rule and the aftermath was also added to enrich the content of the book.

This work, which largely based on the Dutch archival records, gives detailed information and valuable insights about the historical development of Islam in Indonesia, colonial policies of the Netherlands, state-religion relations, religious institutions as well as Islamic movements.
