Based on experience of the Marmara Earthquake on August 17, 1999, this study examines how the victims of the earthquake perceive this catastrophe, what power they attribute it to, and which concepts and references they use to explain it.

The main concern of the authors is the role played by the victims’ religious beliefs and rituals in dealing with the psychological trauma caused by the losses they suffered as a result of the earthquake.
