This work investigates the question of Muslim identity in Azerbaijan and its basic characteristics in the Soviet and post-Soviet era. It also will bring to the fore how these periods have influenced the shaping of a Muslim identity, focusing on the elements of Muslim identity that have changed and those that have not.
Chapter one examines the historical roots of Muslim identity, particularly during the period that stretches from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the Soviet occupation; here the impact of economic developments, ethnic relations and the process of modernization and nationalization upon the Muslim identity will be brought into the light.
Chapter two indicates the influence of Soviet politics on religion. An examination of the process of nationalization under the Soviet regime will follow. Special emphasis is placed on the process that indicates the place of religious elements in this identity. The question of how the society has has maintained its religious identity and practices will also be dealt with.
Chapter three focuses on the changing and unchanging factors of religious identiy and their reflections on society in the period of independence.
