Starting at the end of the 19th century, new arguments were advanced proposing a change in the approach to the contents and methods of the science of kalam, or theology. These arguments emerged as a result of the growing influence of the westernization movements on the Islamic world and of the increasingly common application of modern scientific methods. This book examines the way Islamic scholars approached the science of kalam, the manner in which they analyzed important topics, and the instruments they used to prove their points in such important cultural centers as those in Ottoman Turkey, Egypt, and India at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The author presents a multi-faceted analysis of the new ways of looking at the science of kalam during this time period.

As a re-constructer of the theological convention of the traditionist school (Ashab al-hadith), and a critic of major Muslim thinkers, Ibn Taymiyya is one of the most influential figures in Islamic intellectual history. His focus on philosophical debates provided him with a deeper rational approach, despite his traditionist background, as well as a confrontational stance on intellectual issues and figures. However, biographers, as well as historians of Islamic thought, highlight only his traditionism and influence on contemporary Salafism, and generally neglect the critical and rational aspects of his thought. In addition, he is charged with being the main source of Islamic radicalism, Wahhabism, or modern fundamentalism. The complexity of his critique, and especially the aspects of his alternative Qur&#39;anic rationality were so far underestimated. This book, rather than covering all his views on Islamic theology, aims to explore the foundations and the methodological distinctiveness of Ibn Taymiyya&rsquo;s thought, through an examination of his critique of the mutakallimun, i.e. classical Muslim theologians.

Ottoman Studies from Past to Present includes the communiqu&eacute;s of the symposium titled &quot;Ottoman Studies from Past to Present: Findings, Problems, Proposals&quot; organized by TDV Centre for Islamic Studies (ISAM) on 24-25 February 2001 in order to analyze the current situation of Ottoman history studies and to discuss problems such as history methodology, source analysis in Turkey.

Twenty papers were presented in the symposium under a total of eleven main headings: political history, history of administration, history of law, history of economics, history of science, Islamic philosophy, kalam, sufism, fiqh, scholars, literature and contemporary Turkish thought. In the communiqu&eacute;s presented by Ş. Yanyalı Esad Efendi in the Light of His Period and Scholarly Circle, which presents an example of the intellectual deepening and diversification of the Ottoman scholarly world in the 17th and 18th centuries by focusing on Yanyalı Esad Efendi, consists of essays by fourteen authors. These complementary essays, based on extensive research, present Yanyalı&#39;s biography, scholarly circle, and major works, as well as his contributions to Islamic thought and Aristotle&#39;s philosophical heritage, in addition to his knowledge of classical Eastern and Western languages, his focus on philosophy, and his translations and commentaries from Latin. In the light of the testimony of Yanyalı&#39;s own texts and the biographical sources of the period, these studies reveal that he was able to make expansions in the tradition of Islamic and Ottoman thought, to evaluate the schools representing the intellectual heritage of his time with an impartial approach, and to receive opinions from thinkers of different stripes. His syntheses between the mutaqaddimīn and mutaqahhirīn, Illuminationist and theological, Sufi and Peripatetic traditions, and his new proposals and evaluations on the terms of physics and logic are some of the topics examined. These scholarly contributions, which are based on primary sources by authors who are experts in their fields, will help to understand the world of thought of Asad Effendi of Yanyalı in its entirety and to better determine his position in the period.
