Ottoman Studies from Past to Present includes the communiqués of the symposium titled "Ottoman Studies from Past to Present: Findings, Problems, Proposals" organized by TDV Centre for Islamic Studies (ISAM) on 24-25 February 2001 in order to analyze the current situation of Ottoman history studies and to discuss problems such as history methodology, source analysis in Turkey.

Twenty papers were presented in the symposium under a total of eleven main headings: political history, history of administration, history of law, history of economics, history of science, Islamic philosophy, kalam, sufism, fiqh, scholars, literature and contemporary Turkish thought. In the communiqués presented by Ş. Tufan Buzpınar, Yusuf Halaçoğlu, Feridun Emecen, Azmi Özcan, İlber Ortaylı, Ali Akyıldız, M. Âkif Aydın, Şükrü Özen, Orhan Okay, Fethi Gedikli, İskender Pala, Murat Çizakça, İhsan Fazlıoğlu, M. Sait Özervarlı, A. Yaşar Ocak, Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, Emre Dölen, Mustafa Kara, Mehmet İpşirli, Gökhan Çetinsaya, İsmail Kara, Nejat Göyünç and Mehmet Genç, scientific researches conducted in the specified areas of Ottoman history were subjected to criticism in terms of approach, method and resources, and proposals regarding the researches to be made were also expressed in addition to the findings related to the existing studies.
