Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī is the first and the most influential name of the Late Classical Period in which thoughts and works before Ghazzālī within the History of Islamic Thought re-evaluated. al-Rāzī, who wrote pieces in many different fields particularly in Kalām and philosophy, established the main distinctions of the disciplines and due to his reformation of the discipline of Kalām he later named justifiably as al-Imām. Within the scope of this project, 40 daftar&rsquo;s as samples of the registers of Istanbul courts (Istanbul, Galata, Eyup and Uskudar) have been selected from different ages and transliterated into modern Turkish and the facsimiles have been added to every volume in order for comparison. The forty-volume output of the project, which was initiated in 2008, was published with the support of the commission of 2010 European Capital of Culture-Istanbul.

These court records include not only the records of legal disputes which were passed to the courts, but also the records similar to today&rsquo;s municipal works and notary documents like regulations and standards for artisans, craftsmen and tradesmen, price lists of the goods, waqf bills, bills for sales, donations and loans, documents about partitions of inheritance, testaments, marriages and divorces; and finally copies of decrees and orders from the Imperial Court about construction and maintenance of the buildings belonging to waqfs and/or the public. These data help to penetrate into the details of Ottoman cultural life. Interesting information about non-muslims can also be found among the legal disputes that were passed to the courts. These records make it possible to see how the law as a whole was applied among Ottomans.

The project was conducted under the direction of ISAM&rsquo;s former director Prof. M. Akif Aydin, and Dr. Coskun Yilmaz contributed to it as the editor. Prof. Idris Bostan, Prof. Feridun Emecen, Prof. Ismail Erunsal, Prof. Mehmet Ipsirli and Dr. Mustafa Oguz worked as the members of the academic board. Also, a helpful index which shows every word in its context was prepared by the late Dr. Yucel Dagli.

The published work was presented to the public on 20 December 2012 with a press conference organized at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality building and now is available on internet free of charge.

The subject of this book is the role of Arabic poetry in the interpretation of the Qur&rsquo;an in the second century of the Hijri when productive scientific activities were being carried out in various areas of the Islamic world. It would not be an overstatement, I assume, if we were to voice the idea that it is impossible to come across a culture and civilization that has managed to survive without encountering, knowing, exchanging goods and ideas with, or even confronting different cultures in one way or another. The moments of encounter, exchange or confrontation of any culture with another have either evolved in a spontaneous flow or generated in some way. The Silk Road, for instance, not only created a significant opportunity for the exchange of goods between East and West, but also formed a web of communication and interaction that deepened cultural contact between societies for centuries. Similar channels of communication and interaction between the Muslim world and Europe can be found throughout history. This network of interaction was formed via two passages; the first was in Iberia in the 8th century, shortly followed by Sicily, while the second was in the Balkans beginning from the 14th century.

This compilation of articles primarily examines the second encounter which took place between the Ottomans and Europe from multiple perspectives, covering topics ranging from journeys to the transfer of knowledge and technology. Authors, coming from different cultural backgrounds with differing areas of research interest, and who have also benefited from interdisciplinary analyses, attempt to focus on the domains where these two worlds came together to learn about, discover and trade with one another in peace rather than more common issues, such as confrontations or wars. Therefore, the scope of this work begins with pre-Ottoman period and ends at the close of the 18th century, which coincides with the middle of the era of Selim III (1789-1807), when the Ottomans were searching for the transition from the ancien r&eacute;gime to the new order.

The major goal of this book is to analyze Selim III and his era from multiple perspectives on the occassion of the 200th anniversary of his death; here the transition from the ancien r&eacute;gime to the new order, in other words the endeavor to progress from the ancient classical system of governance to a new order, and all of the consequences are examined through original research as part of interdisciplinary studies. Not only was this a period that corresponds with several major attempts by the Ottomans to transform their social, political, martial and educational systems, but it was also an era when they experienced various fluctuating moments, passionate discussions and crucial controversies, significant progress, even impressive leaps, while there were also deep disappointments. &nbsp;It must, however, be stated that certain characteristics which were observed during the process of Western modernization, such as mobilization, reasonable innovation, self-discipline and revival, could also be noticed during the attempt by the Ottomans to reform themselves in this era.

Covering the second phase of Turkish modernization, as defined by Niyazi Berkes, and growing out of several works that endeavored to analyze the phenomena of this period from the martial development to foreign relations, from artistic life to the educational system, this book attempts to make a modest contribution to the history of Turkish thought, politics and culture by focusing on the question of &ldquo;Why?&rdquo; rather than &ldquo;What?&rdquo;.

Rifa&lsquo;at Abou-El-Haj (Ph.D., Princeton, 1963) started teaching at California State University, Long Beach, in 1964, and moved to the State University of New York (SUNY), Binghamton, in 1992. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, as well as two books, The 1703 Rebellion and the Structure of Ottoman Politics (1984; forthcoming in Turkish in 2011) and Formation of the Modern State: The Ottoman Empire, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries (1991; 2nd ed., 2005), which was hailed as &ldquo;a history classic&rdquo; and also translated to Turkish; and the co-editor of The Ottoman City and Its Parts: Urban Structure and Social Order (1991). His work has been considered as belonging to &ldquo;the short but distinguished critical tradition in Middle Eastern history that is associated with names such as Edward Said and Maxime Rodinson.&rdquo; 
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;This volume grew out of a conference that was convened in Abou-El-Haj&rsquo;s honor by Donald Quataert and Baki Tezcan in April 2010 at SUNY, Binghamton, where his colleagues and students presented papers and reflected on his impact on Ottoman and Middle Eastern/North African Studies. Quataert is Distinguished Professor of History at SUNY, Binghamton, and the author of numerous books and articles, including The Ottoman Empire, 1700-1922; and Tezcan is Associate Professor of History, and Religious Studies, at the University of California, Davis, and the author of The Second Ottoman Empire: Political and Social Transformation in the Early Modern World.

Şem&rsquo;i Efendi was a 16th century-scholar who translated Sufi works into Turkish and made commentaries on the same. This book aims to introduce his commentary of Mevlana&rsquo;s Masnawi, and to define its place in the tradition of Ottoman commentary.

Şem&rsquo;i Efendi&rsquo;s commentary of the Masnawi is exemplary among contemporary works and later commentaries in that it was the first Turkish commentary to include the entire work, it was written on the order of Sultan Murad III, it included the perception that the knowledge of meratib-i wujud in the terminology of wahdat-al wujud was key in understanding the Masnawi, and finally, in that it referred to more than 80 sources of basic Islamic sciences and Sufi literature and 300 narratives. In particular this commentary, in which the Masnawi&rsquo;s dimension of acting as a guide for the irshad (path) is brought to the fore, makes it easier to comprehend the Sufi concepts that are hidden behind the symbolism of the Masnawi couplets. This work also sets out the errors of classification in Sufi commentaries on the Masnawi in the form of pre- and post-Ankarav&icirc;.

This book examines the existence and divinity in the thought of Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Tūsī who is one of the prominent philosophers and theologians of the 13th century. In this respect, the book deals with various issues based on al-Tūsī&rsquo;s Arabic and Persian books, such as existence, nature, the separation between existence and nature, the fields of existence, inexistence, theory of states, &nbsp;recognitions of reason as an attribution, classification of possible existence, proving God&rsquo;s existence, God&rsquo;s attributes and actions. The book presents that al-Tūsī&rsquo;s views on existence and divinity in general manifest similarities with Avicenna&rsquo;s views and that he diverges on certain points from traditional thinking.

By their surviving examples, Anatolian libraries established from the period of Saljukids until the Republican period are important testimonials for the history of our culture that provide us information on their architecture, history of their development, their personnel, and administration.

Based on K&ouml;pr&uuml;l&uuml; Library (1661) in Istanbul, it is usually accepted that the earliest independent libraries goes back to mid-17th century. Even though there is no endowment deed or epitaph of available to us, with the anonymous library in Menemen that we study in our book, it seems possible to take this date back to the end of 15th or beginning of 16th century.

The construction of libraries in Anatolia that had slowly gained a certain architectural identity in the 16th and 17th centuries gained momentum in the 18th century and showed its real progress in the 19th century. Whereas the earliest independent example in Istanbul appeared in mid-17th century, showed certain development in the 18th century in parallel to the cultural structure of the period, and finally flourished in the 19th century. This book is in a way a documentary work that examines Anatolian libraries from all aspects.

Suleiman&#39;s Understanding of Tawil&rdquo; (1999) and his doctorate degree from Marmara University Institute of Social Sciences with his thesis titled &ldquo;Sayyid Sharīf al-Jurjānī&#39;s Understanding of Tawil: Metaphysical, Logical and Linguistic Foundations of Interpretation&rdquo; (2006). In 2012, he became an associate professor and in 2017 he became a professor. He is currently a faculty member at Marmara University Faculty of Theology.
